Environmental Advisor

Location: Scotland
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

Our client, a well-established and highly regarded Civil Engineering Main Contractor with an annual turnover exceeding £150 million, is seeking a motivated Environmental Advisor.  This is a permanent role covering projects across Scotland, joining a growing team following recent project successes.

Key Responsibilities:

Your main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing and developing the environmental department, providing relevant training and overseeing environmental staff.
  • Overseeing all environmental aspects of the division’s internal and external waste management operations.
  • Ensuring compliance with best practices and current environmental legislation.
  • Guaranteeing compliance with mandatory environmental requirements at all construction sites, including site licence conditions, planning regulations, emissions limits, and ground stability monitoring.
  • Preparing and submitting all required environmental and waste management reports to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
  • Acting as the primary liaison for environmental regulations within the division, maintaining regular communication with external bodies such as planning authorities, the Environment Agency, and SEPA regarding environmental matters.
  • Implementing and maintaining Environmental Management Systems to ISO14001 standards, ensuring continued accreditation with the British Standards Institution (BSI).
  • Conducting regular environmental audits across all construction sites.
  • Contributing to the strategic development, planning, and management of the company’s waste management facilities. This includes identifying potential sites, assessing feasibility, and considering design and operational constraints.
  • Analysing site investigations to assess environmental impact.
  • Working closely with the estimating department to support tender pricing.
  • Creating material management plans for projects with identified contamination or environmental concerns, ensuring alignment with site remediation strategies.
  • Collaborating with site teams to address environmental and remediation challenges during project execution.
  • Researching and implementing new systems and methods to improve efficiency in response to evolving environmental legislation.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you must be a strong communicator and meet the following criteria:

  • Degree in an environmental subject.
  • Experience as an Environmental Advisor on civil engineering projects is essential.
  • Experience working on power projects is desirable.
  • Strong IT skills and proficiency in relevant software.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Knowledge of working with external authorities such as SEPA and Local Authorities.
  • Full UK driving licence.
