Position Summary


The Design Engineer will work closely with the Engineering Manager and wider engineering team to develop and enhance products. The role involves producing and updating CAD drawings, creating and modifying product designs, and liaising with internal teams, customers, and suppliers. Responsibilities include managing design projects from conception to prototype, ensuring that designs meet customer requirements, and improving production processes. The role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration across multiple teams.


Primary Duties


  • 3D CAD Design & Modelling: Develop and produce models and drawings of new products using 3D CAD software.
  • Create detailed drawing packs following customer specifications.
  • Propose alternative design options to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Identify and resolve potential assembly, fitment, or manufacturing limitations during the design phase.
  • Develop step-by-step build process drawings (similar to IKEA flat packs) and manufacturing instructions.
  • Produce General Arrangements (GAs), wiring diagrams, and accessory drawings for marketing materials.
  • BIM Content Creation: Assist in maintaining and updating the BIM library for product ranges, collaborating with the drawing office and managing requests through the change system.
  • Custom Product Design: Design and produce drawings for custom-built products as requested.
  • New Product Development: Contribute to the introduction and commercialization of new products by completing a New Product Checklist and facilitating the design process.
  • MDR Facilitation: Address drawing errors or requests for improvement through the MDR process, collaborating with Production Engineers to resolve issues, and updating stakeholders.
  • Documentation & Revision Control: Maintain and update drawings, adhering to EPDM workflows, and ensure all changes are communicated to relevant departments and suppliers.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Assist with prototype assembly, manufacturing, and product testing, including site visits as needed.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Champion new methods, technologies, and ideas that improve productivity, quality, and safety. Liaise with suppliers to enhance product quality and introduce design improvements.


Additional Responsibilities


  • Write Bills of Materials for products.
  • Investigate and address design-related Quality Assurance issues.
  • Support other departments and travel between Group sites as needed.

As a Design Engineer, you are responsible for maintaining a safe work environment for yourself and others. You are required to:

Selection Criteria

Education & Qualifications


  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering/Manufacturing discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • SolidWorks Certified Professional (CSWP) preferred.


Experience & Skills


  • Proficient in CAD drawing and modelling (SolidWorks and Autodesk REVIT/Inventor).
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles (e.g., engineering, fluid dynamics, material characteristics).
  • Understanding of electrical theory, motors, and associated equipment.
  • Familiarity with the HVAC industry and its competitors.
  • Experience with sheet metal design preferred.
