Our client is seeking an Assistant Secretary to support a leading education provider in managing the governance of a leading education provider, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders. This role is crucial in facilitating the smooth operation of the Board of Governors and ensuring all administration is carried out correctly and timely.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Support the Secretary in advising the Board on their duties and responsibilities concerning the governance frameworks and legal requirements.
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with legal advisors and ensure statutory returns are completed and submitted on time.
  • Maintain a framework for sharing updates and best practices in education governance with the Board.
  • Coordinate all correspondence relating to the Board and Committees, acting as a reference point for all enquiries.
  • Manage the administration of Board-related and sub-committee activities, including setting agendas, convening meetings, circulating agendas and papers, and taking and circulating minutes.
  • Ensure high-quality papers are drafted for the Board’s consideration and maintain a robust document management system for all Board documents.
  • Support the Secretary in maintaining a Board member skills matrix, managing the recruitment and induction of new Board members, and identifying and meeting the training needs of all Governors.
  • Ensure regular reviews of the Board’s and its committees’ effectiveness and manage the interface between the Board’s business and the internal decision-making structures.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a similar governance role, ideally within the higher education sector.
  • Strong understanding of the legal and regulatory environment pertaining to higher education, including charity law and Companies Acts.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of maintaining effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Proficiency in using governance portals and document management systems.
