Mortgage Underwriter

Our client, a reputable mortgage lender, is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their dynamic team. As a key player in their underwriting function, the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing and making decisions on mortgage applications, ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate mortgage applications, reviewing financial documents, credit reports, and property valuations.
  • Assess risk and determine the suitability of applicants based on affordability and creditworthiness.
  • Make informed decisions in line with company policy and industry regulations.
  • Communicate with brokers, agents, and internal stakeholders to clarify documentation and resolve any application issues.
  • Provide expert advice on underwriting guidelines and processes to ensure a smooth and compliant application journey.
  • Maintain detailed records of all underwriting decisions and transactions.
  • Keep up to date with changes in the mortgage market and regulatory environment to ensure compliance.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvements within the underwriting function.

Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Mortgage Underwriter within a lending environment.
  • Strong understanding of mortgage products, underwriting criteria, and compliance regulations.
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to assess financial statements, credit reports, and affordability calculations.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard underwriting systems and software.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with brokers and other stakeholders.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and a keen eye for identifying and mitigating risk.
  • Relevant industry qualifications (e.g., CeMAP, or equivalent) would be advantageous.
