Background: Strategy and Governance, Leadership and Public/Charities Sector

This is an exciting time to join MK SNAP as Board Member, alongside Chair, Melanie Beck MBE and Centre Director, Steven Carruthers. You will have the opportunity to support and guide MK SNAP as it moves into a new development phase.

Established in 1992, MK SNAP (Milton Keynes Special Needs Advancement Project) is a charity built on achievement, teamwork and individual development. Their purpose is to offer education, life skills, work preparation and opportunities for work to individuals aged 18+ with learning difficulties.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for a variety of specialist experience for multiple Board roles, detailed below, alongside a passion for the provision of Life Skills and Work Experience Opportunities, an understanding or interest in governance and excellent acumen and experience of strong leadership. Also, as well as specific skill and experience requirements, all board members need to be active ambassadors for the charity and will be required to help further its financial objectives by having a part in things such as events, expanding MK SNAP’s network and fundraising.

Key Roles and Responsibilities include:

Legal - The Legal Board Member will be someone who ideally has a charity sector background and is keen to use their Legal expertise and enthusiasm to improve the quality and accessibility of legal services, with a deep commitment to ensuring regulation, ensuring high professional standards to guide the direction and decision making of the organisation.

Property - The Property Board Member will be someone who holds a specialism within the Property and Land space, able to advise and guide the organisation around their responsibilities and strategies relating to the Property and Land, future development and extensions.

Safeguarding - The Safeguarding Board Member will ensure that MK SNAP develops policies and procedures that keep it up to date with law, and to ensure that the Board fully understands safeguarding principles and training and can respond promptly and proportionately to any incidents.

Fundraising - The Fundraising Board Member will identify, assess and support the organisations progress to new grant sources and fundraising opportunities. In consultation with the Chair and Treasurer, to develop, and support implementation of a fundraising plan aligned with budget requirements.

Marketing - The Marketing and Communications Board Member will advise and support the development of the Brand and position within the local charity sector, considering a variety of audiences, helping the board develop both resources and activities which will support growth and Sales opportunities.

Knowledge, skills, and experience required, Aside from the specific experience as details above, we would like applicants:

  • To have an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of the Board and be prepared to access information and training to develop

  • To be able to operate strategically and to work effectively with the other Board Members, Centre Director and SLT to continue to develop the strategic vision for the organisation
