Our client, a leading processing facility in Kent, is looking for a Health, Safety and Environment Manager to join their leadership team.

Responsibilities for the role of Health, Safety and Environment Manager

  • Ensure the company complies with all relevant Health, Safety and Environmental legislation
  • Undertake proactive engagement and communicate with site staff, health safety and environmental awareness, ensuring they are complying with safe working practices and procedures through regular inspections
  • Actively ensure that all Operations are carried out in a manner that is compliant with all health safety and Environmental legislation and permitting
  • Oversee the arranging and chairing of Safety Committee meetings and coordinate with other managers to arrange any actions required
  • Report to the CEO on all Health, Safety and Environmental related matters
  • Undertake regular health safety and environmental site inspections and coordinate with the Management team to arrange any necessary improvements and repairs
  • Actively manage fire safety on site Undertake fire risk assessments and arrange any work required to ensure the company complies with the requirements of RRFSO 2005
  • Proactively check fire alarm system and emergency lights for functionality and suitability and arrange remedial work where required
  • Manage statutory medical surveillance as required by CLaW, COSHH, Noise at Work, night working etc and maintain records
  • Arrange statutory plant inspections for LOLER, LEV, Pressure Vessels etc and maintain records, carry out regular work equipment inspections to ensure that guarding is suitable and sufficient and in good repair and working order
  • Ensure that new plant and equipment is to the required standard has the necessary safety inspection certification and conforms to PUWER regulations
  • Manage the presence of asbestos on site
  • Ensure all monitoring relevant to the Sites Permitting Consents is undertaken and organising any action required by the results
  • Oversee and manage first aid cover levels and validity
  • Build on the company’s behavioural change programme in health safety and environmental awareness
  • Write and implement Safe Operating Procedures in conjunction with the Operations and Production Manager and ensure they are consistent with the risk assessments
  • Write, deliver and arrange Health, Safety and Environmental training requirements for all employees including the agency
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, making reports under RIDDOR where required and reporting to the company’s insurers when necessary
  • Compiling accident statistics, identifying trends and taking action accordingly
  • Deal with all aspects of any personal injury claims received by the company including liaising with the insurers and their investigator, compiling evidence-taking statements and keeping records
  • Ensure there is a suitable system for reporting accidents and near misses
  • Record and maintain all Health, Safety and Environmental records
  • Maintain the COSHH register and carry out COSHH risk assessments, seeking expert assistance where necessary
  • Undertake and update process risk assessments and ensure they are maintained in the process control system utilising relevant hierarchies of control
  • Maintain and update the Company's Health, Safety, Environment and quality policies
  • Maintain and update the Company’s Integrated Management System
  • Liaise with Health Safety Executive, Environmental Agency during inspections and investigations
  • Assisting the Commercial team with H,S,Q, and E requirements of any contracts or tenders

Skills and Experience for the Role of Health, Safety and Environment Manager

  • You will have a solid understanding of health and safety and environmental legislation applicable in the UK
  • You will be a full Member of a relevant professional body (or working towards it) e.g., IOSH, CIWM, RoSPA, IEMA
  • You will hold a current and valid NEBOSH Diploma
  • Possess an Environmental Management Diploma
  • A proven track record of working in a high-risk environment is essential for the role
  • You will be a proven competent trainer, both producing and delivering to a wide demographic of people
  • Experience in liaising with the Health & Safety Executive and the Environment Agency
  • You must have strong computer skills in MS Office and other typical business-orientated IT systems
  • The ability to communicate on all levels within a company both in writing and orally
  • You will be able to work as part of a team for the overall benefit of the company
  • Can take a proactive continuous improvement attitude to HSQE on site
