Customs Compliance Specialist Role Overview:

NC Associates are supporting a globally leading business who now require the skills and experience of a Customs Compliance Specialist to support their imports and exports team. This is newly created and business-critical position which will be responsible for overseeing customs compliance and maintaining strong working relationships with both internal and external customs agents.  It is vital to ensure that all imports and exports are conducted in full compliance with international trade regulations, tariffs and customs laws. As this position will be a lead role, a strong background in international customs with the ability and confidence to navigate complex regulatory environments and make decisions is essential.

Customs Compliance Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Regulatory Compliance –To ensure that all import and export activities comply with relevant customs laws, regulations and international trade agreements, taking ownership of all necessary HMRC approvals relating to customs duties.
  • Documentation Management – To obtain and review all necessary documentation relating to customs clearance, including bills of lading, certificates of origin and other required documents. To conduct reviews of all import/export declarations made by external customs agents.
  • Tariff Classification – To accurately classify goods according to the UK Trade Tariff and EU CN Codes to determine applicable duties and taxes. To supervise and reconcile the company’s import duty deferment account.
  • Internal Audits – To Conduct regular internal audits to assess compliance with customs regulations and identify potential risks or areas for improvement.
  • Risk Mitigation – To develop and implement strategies to minimise compliance risks, including the assessment of potential penalties and fines.
  • Stakeholder Communication – To liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, government agencies and internal departments to ensure smooth customs clearance processes.
  • Team Training & Development –To provide training and guidance to internal teams on customs compliance procedures and regulatory updates.
  • Continuous Improvement – To stay updated on changes in customs regulations and industry best practices to ensure the company’s compliance strategy and internal regulation remains effective and up to date.

Customs Compliance Specialist Required Experience:

  • Previous experience in an international customs compliance position is essential – Experience gained within a larger business environment is preferable.
  • An In-depth understanding and knowledge of international customs regulations, the UK Trade Tariff, CN codes, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and other relevant trade compliance frameworks.
  • Advanced analytical skill with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Confident verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with various internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
  • The ability to confidently provide guidance and make business critical decisions relating to customs compliance.
  • Advanced Excel and Power BI skills.
  • A desire to continue to develop within a customs compliance career route.
  • Previous experience of working in the oil and gas sector is highly advantageous, although not essential.
