We are looking to recruit a Waste Education Officer. As a Waste Education Officer, you will play an integral role in supporting the daily operations of Environmental Services. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, with strong organizational skills along with the ability to multi-task and provide a high level of customer care and act as a representative for the service, individually and as part of a team. Attention to detail, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently will be essential to succeed in this role. You will be required to maintain a high level of accuracy, whilst meeting tight deadlines and have the proven ability to work collaboratively in a high-volume environment.

Key tasks:

  1. To work as part of a team and individually to promote the Council’s refuse & recycling service with particular emphasis on the correct and appropriate ways to dispose of waste and recycling.
  1. Carry out daily canvassing duties and assessments in relation to the refuse and recycling service, specifically the recycling of household and occasionally, commercial waste. Monitor customer compliance with service requirements while offering support, advice and guidance on the correct presentation of waste.
  1. Advise the public on contamination issues relating to the kerbside recycling collection scheme and signposting residents to alternative options for waste reduction or disposal of waste unsuitable for resident’s kerbside bins such as small and large electricals, large items and other difficult wastes.
  1. Record and monitor requests for information received and address any complaints from members of the public in a timely manner. Use of email and other service area software packages, to provide specific advice and support to residents. Communication both verbally and/or in writing ensuring, where appropriate, any agreed actions such as ordering and delivering wheeled bins/caddies and monitoring their proper use are fulfilled.
  1. To undertake visits, carry out assessments and monitoring in order to respond to customer needs this includes but is not limited to assessing the need for additional medical waste bins, larger recycling bins, assisted collection or the provision of replacement wheelie bins.
  1. Undertake waste audits to support the enforcement of Council Policies. You are expected to wear a body camera to facilitate completion of reports and data, relating to interactions with residents.
  1. Carry out day to day maintenance and health and safety checks of the council vehicles in accordance with Council policy.
  1. Undertake other duties to assist the Council in fulfilling its duties commensurate with the current grade of the post.
  2. Provide on-site training and mentoring to other team members and apprentices where required as well as liaise with recycling and refuse collection teams and advocates working within the Customer Service Network.
  3. Work outdoors in all weather conditions. The job is physically demanding.
  1. Work flexibly, covering and supporting the service in line with the needs of the Council.
  1. You may be required to work on weekends and Bank/Public holidays, as well as between Christmas and New Year.
  1. Promote and champion a positive organisation-wide culture that reflects the Council’s values.
  1. Carry out such duties as may be required by the service as appropriate to the post.

Applicants must be willing to work outdoors as the job may sometimes be physically demanding and should also hold a full UK driving license. It is essential that you have knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word and Excel, knowledge of CRM systems would also be advantageous.

You will have the opportunity to work flexibly across the working day to meet the needs of the business, your normal working week will be Tuesday to Friday 07.30 - 17.15, 37 hours. Your normal place of work will be Jack Crawford House, Commercial Road, Sunderland, SR2 8QR.
